Ideal Body Weight (IBW) Calculator

Determining your "ideal" weight is a complex balance between aesthetics, medical recommendations, and personal genetics. The Calculay Ideal Weight Calculator aggregates results from the four most scientifically validated clinical formulas alongside the World Health Organization's (WHO) BMI ranges to give you a comprehensive, realistic target weight based on your height and gender.

The Four Major Clinical Formulas

Decades ago, physicians required a fast, standardized way to estimate a patient's ideal weight to accurately administer weight-dependent drug dosages (like anesthesia). Over time, four leading formulas emerged.

1. The J.D. Robinson Formula (1983)

Considered one of the most balanced formulas for general use.

  • Men: 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet
  • Women: 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet

2. The Miller Formula (1983)

Similar to Robinson, but slightly more aggressive on weight additions for taller individuals.

  • Men: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet
  • Women: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet

3. The G.J. Devine Formula (1974)

Originally created for calculating medication dosages. It remains the most widely used formula in modern pharmacology, although it sometimes outputs unhealthily low targets for shorter women.

4. The Hamwi Formula (1964)

The oldest methodology, frequently used to establish baseline diets for patients with diabetes.

Which Number Should I Trust?

You will notice that these formulas often output different results, occasionally varying by a few kilograms. This proves that there is no singular "perfect" weight. Human frames differ—some people are naturally broad-shouldered and heavy-set, while others have naturally slender, light skeletal frames.

Instead of fixating on one exact number yielded by the Robinson or Devine equation, you should look at the Healthy BMI Range provided at the bottom of the calculator. As long as your body weight falls securely within the boundary limits of a 18.5 to 24.9 BMI, you are physically doing well.
