Body Fat Calculator

Estimate your body fat percentage using the US Navy Method.

Body Fat Calculator

Measure at navel level.

Accurate Body Fat Calculator (U.S. Navy Method)

While the Body Mass Index (BMI) tells you if your weight is proportional to your height, it completely ignores body composition. Two people can weight exactly the same, but one might be an athlete with high muscle mass, while the other might have dangerous levels of visceral fat. The Calculay Body Fat Calculator uses the rigorously tested U.S. Navy Circumference Method to estimate your exact body fat percentage, providing a much clearer picture of your health.

How the U.S. Navy Method Works

To use this specific formula, you will need a flexible measuring tape. The formula requires precise tape measurements of specific body parts to estimate the volume of fat tissue.

  • For Men: You need your Height, Neck circumference, and Abdomen circumference (measured horizontally at the level of the navel/belly button).
  • For Women: You need Height, Neck, Natural Waist (the narrowest part of the torso), and Hip circumference (the widest part of the buttocks).

Understanding Your Body Fat Percentage Categories

Healthy body fat ranges differ significantly between men and women because women naturally carry more essential fat for reproductive health. The general guidelines established by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) are:

Men Requirements:

  • Essential Fat: 2–5%
  • Athletes: 6–13%
  • Fitness: 14–17%
  • Average/Acceptable: 18–24%
  • Obese: 25% and higher

Women Requirements:

  • Essential Fat: 10–13%
  • Athletes: 14–20%
  • Fitness: 21–24%
  • Average/Acceptable: 25–31%
  • Obese: 32% and higher

Why is Body Fat Percentage Important?

Focusing purely on the weighing scale can be highly misleading during a fitness journey. When you begin lifting weights or exercising, you might simultaneously lose fat and gain muscle. The scale might not move at all, leading to frustration. By regularly tracking your body fat percentage every 2-4 weeks using our calculator, you can accurately verify that you are losing fat tissue rather than just water or muscle mass.
