Tip & Gratuity Calculator: Split Bills Instantly
Dining out with a large group of friends or colleagues should be a relaxing experience, but figuring out the final bill can quickly become stressful. The Calculay Tip Calculator takes the friction out of restaurant math, allowing you to instantly calculate the exact gratuity percentage and cleanly split the final check among multiple people down to the exact decimal.
Global Tipping Etiquette
Tipping norms vary drastically depending on where you are in the world. Being aware of local customs ensures you reward good service without accidentally overpaying or offending the staff.
- United States & Canada: Tipping is culturally mandatory, as servers often earn a sub-minimum wage base salary. A 15% tip is considered the bare minimum for acceptable service, 18% is standard, and 20% to 25% is expected for excellent service.
- Europe (UK, France, Italy): Service staff are paid a standard living wage, and a "Service Charge" is often already included in the bill. Leaving an extra 5% to 10% in cash for good service is appreciated, but not strictly required.
- India: Many mid-to-high-end restaurants automatically add a 10% "Service Charge" to the bill (which is legally optional if service was poor, but usually paid). If no service charge is levied, leaving a 10% tip is standard practice.
- Japan & South Korea: Tipping is generally non-existent and can sometimes be seen as insulting, as excellent service is considered the baseline expectation of the establishment.
Pre-Tax vs. Post-Tax Tipping
A common debate is whether you should calculate your tip percentage on the Subtotal (before government sales tax) or the Final Total (after tax). Etiquette experts generally agree that you should tip on the Pre-Tax Subtotal. The server did not provide a service for the government taxes, so you shouldn't technically pay a gratuity on the tax amount. However, many people simply tip on the Post-Tax total for the sake of fast mental math. Our calculator gives you the granular control to choose exactly how you apply the percentage.
