Square Footage Calculator: Measure Area and Costs

Knowing the exact square footage (or square meters) of a space is the foundational metric for real estate valuation, interior design, and construction contracting. Whether you are buying a new home, ordering hardwood flooring, or hiring commercial painters, the Calculay Square Footage Calculator allows you to instantly compute the 2D area of simple and complex multi-room structures.

How to Calculate Square Footage

The fundamental formula for calculating the area of a standard rectangular room is incredibly simple: Area = Length × Width.

  • If a bedroom is 12 feet long and 15 feet wide, the calculation is 12 × 15 = 180 Square Feet.

Handling Complex Floor Plans

Very few houses are perfect rectangles. Most floor plans feature L-shapes, bay windows, alcoves, and hallways. To calculate the square footage of an irregular shape, you must use the "Decomposition Method":

  1. Visually break the complex room down into smaller, perfect rectangles.
  2. Measure the length and width of each individual rectangle.
  3. Calculate the area of each section independently.
  4. Add all the resulting areas together to find the Total Square Footage.

For example, an L-shaped living room can be split into a primary 15x15 rectangle (225 sq ft) and a smaller 5x10 dining alcove rectangle (50 sq ft), yielding a total area of 275 sq ft.

Why Accurate Measurements Save You Money

Contractors price almost all of their services "Per Square Foot." If you miscalculate the area of your house by just 100 square feet, and you are paying a contractor $15 per square foot for premium hardwood flooring installation, that simple mathematical error will end up costing you $1,500 in wasted materials. Always measure twice to ensure you are buying the precise amount of paint, turf, or flooring required for the job.
